“The Super Robot Wars GC Translation Project”

All right. An old fashion translation patch. A group of people from /m/ alongside the guy from Oppai Missile Translations, the one who translated Mazinger Angels and Mazinger Angels Z, are working on a translation patch for Super Robot Wars GC, the first and only GameCube SRW game. As it stands, there aren’t any details other than that it’s being worked on and that you’ll have to do it through an emulator rather than somehow being able to append it directly to a copy of the disc. All the same, I’m always up for getting to play another SRW game.

Here’s the roster for the game (from Wiki):

  • Blue Comet SPT Layzner
  • Dancouga – Super Beast Machine God*
  • Heavy Metal L-Gaim*
  • J9 Trilogy:
    • Braiger*
    • Baxingar (debut)*
    • Sasuraiger (debut)
  • Metal Armor Dragonar
  • Mazinkaiser (OVA) (debut)*
  • Mirai Robo Daltanious
  • Mobile Suit Gundam*
    • Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
    • Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
    • Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
    • Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
    • Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
  • Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo (OVA)
  • Saikyo Robo Daioja (debut)
  • Trider G7
  • Zettai Muteki Raijin-Oh (debut)*

Ones with asterisks are the ones on the cover from what I can tell. I haven’t played any of the SRWs with the Shin vs. Neo story, so this has really got my hopes up because if it’s Shin vs. Neo

Oh God, yes

“Did You Order Some Obari?” YouTube Video Roundup

Posted in JoJo's Year, Super Robots, Videos with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on 2013/04/09 by OnePixelJumpMan

If you’ve been an anime fan for long enough, you’ve probably heard the name Masami Obari. He’s what I’d call a polarizing individual. On one hand, super robots. He handled the design for super robots such as Dancouga, Fighbird, and the G Compatible Kaiser from SRW OG. On the other hand, boobs. Obari shows tend to go the extra mile in uncomfortable, weirdly proportioned, jiggly jello tits fanservice. It even leaks into his robot shows like Gravion and Dangaizer 3, a show I maintain is a not a robot show but a porn where the actual sex scenes have been replaced with a magic robot. He tends to do better in the mecha designer and animator chairs than the director chair.

For instance, Dangaioh. You may remember Dangaioh as a feature in Super Robot Awesome when we still did that. Part of the old, rare Manga UK dub was uploaded to YouTube by OldAnimeDubs. It’s worth checking out if you’d like some robots straddling the line between serious 80s future drama and super 70s punch bad guys in the face.

But you may also remember that there was a tweet by Obari that he’d like to direct a JoJo’s episode that would have some absurdly high number of animation frames. It never came to fruition because it would cost way too much money, but if you were curious about how Obari would handle directing a modern show, he’s also started directing this robot show Ziguruhazeru for Aniplex. It’s a toy driven show for these robots based on Journey to the West characters, but robot shows have almost always been at least somewhat merchandise driven. It premiered on Aniplex back on the 6th, though I can’t find an episode currently and it was weirdly not mentioned with other spring anime. If you happen to find a recording of the show and like the action you see, let out a small wish that maybe we can see that kind of spirit put into Stardust Crusaders when it happens.

Until then, you can stare infinitely into the one uncovered eye of imprisoned Jotaro Kujo. Someone clipped off and uploaded the brief Part 3 teaser from the end of Episode 26, so if you’d like to watch it in an infinite loop, I understand.

Must Be All That Grendizer in the Water. The Middle East’s First Super Robot Show “Torkaizer” PV 1

Posted in Super Robot Awesome, Super Robots, Videos with tags , , , , on 2013/04/08 by OnePixelJumpMan

Who do we think of as being the first to introduce the, “Anything above 0% is still a chance to win” cliche? I think of it being Gurren Lagann, but that might be naive of me.

Anyway, the super robot show from a place you probably didn’t expect. It’s not that weird. The Middle East still loves the hell out of some UFO Robo Grendizer, so a studio, Alter Ego it looks like, just decided that they can make their own. It looks a bit cliche and the animation doesn’t look top notch, but it’s probably going to be a throwback to 70 super style and 80s “save the city” drama which is not necessarily a bad thing. It’ll be interesting to see super robots handled by another culture that just happened to also grow up with a little Nagai in the morning. Also, the robot design is pretty nice and I love scarves on robots. Keep an eye out.

Giant Robo Now Being Scanlated

Posted in Giant Robo, Super Robots, Text Articles with tags , , , , , , , on 2013/02/10 by OnePixelJumpMan

I need some super robot. I haven’t had any in a while, not since 2nd OG was coming out, and I need my fix.

Oh. That’ll do. HappyScans has started releasing translations of Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s original Giant Robo. If you haven’t seen Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still, put the internet down for a few hours and go watch it. Story, action, robot fists doing what robot fists do best, it’s pretty good. Or maybe you should read this and then watch it? I’m not sure what would be better, but experiencing both is definitely what’s best.

This is Volume 1, and they hope to put out Volume 2 soon. According to their post, the whole thing was already scanned by Dynamic Pro Scans, so it should be soon. Look forward to it.

New Tetsujin, New Style. Man, is it a New Style

Posted in Super Robots, Tetsujin 28, Text Articles with tags , , , , , , on 2013/01/22 by OnePixelJumpMan

What happens when you take this:

And turn it into this:

If you guessed “daily life show about Shotaro Kaneda,” then you are psychic or already heard the news because I never would have guessed that. Yes, we’re getting a new Tetsujin show for the 50th anniversary of the original TV anime from 1963. Tetsujin 28-go Gao will be a little different, focused on the life of the main human character Shotaro Kaneda instead of regular super robot battles in the city, though that will still be part of the show because you can totally see Black Ox back there. The artistic change to what’s being called “pop art” is just a style update for the modern era. It’s goofy colorful, but this is a cartoon for kids to love new and parents/grandparents to feel nostalgic over.

You can look forward to broadcast starting on April 6th, so fansubs probably a day or two after that.

Discotek Media Releasing Diebuster in May

Posted in Diebuster, Gunbuster, Super Robots, Text Articles with tags , , , , , , , , , on 2013/01/08 by OnePixelJumpMan

Discotek being a successful business while releasing almost nothing but shows I want to see is very encouraging.

Last time they came up it was because they were releasing the original 70s Mazinger Z and the original Gaiking. Since there’s no such thing as releasing too many super robot shows, now they’re going to be putting out the entirety of Diebuster or Aim for the Top 2!, the sequel to Gunbuster, according to their Facebook. Look forward to forward to the release this May.

Gaiking in Hollywood

Posted in Gaiking, Super Robots, Text Articles with tags , , , , on 2012/12/19 by OnePixelJumpMan

A while back, this trailer came out.

It’s a small, really uninformative trailer for a live action Gaiking movie to be released in 2012. Not a lot of other news came out of that, at least that didn’t pass over my head, and because the trailer was so obtuse, I just let it go. Looks like that was just me, though, because some new news from AnimeAnime.jp has come down the pipe about it being produced as a Hollywood movie. Not just by anyone either.

According to the article, it’s going to be produced by none other than Gale Anne Hurd. Hurd was producer of many famous movies such as The Terminator, Aliens, and The Abyss and is the current producer of The Walking Dead. Now she’s going to work on Gaiking.

It’s quite a jump. That trailer came out a few years ago, and I just assumed it fizzled without me hearing about it. Now it’s got a real Hollywood producer that has produced good things attached to the project. This might end up being all right.

Super Robot Wars UX Trailer! Vocaloid has Robots?

Posted in Dancouga, Gundam, Mazinger, Super Robots with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 2012/12/12 by OnePixelJumpMan

This is how I imagine it is at the Banpresto conference table: “2nd Super Robot Wars Original Generation? That was like a week ago. It’s old news. It’s time for the next one.” And it is time for Super Robot Wars UX on 3DS.

It may not seem like a whole lot after the incredible animations we got from OG 2, but I like a few of the faces we’re seeing. I only can’t identify the second one and ninth. The lion face on number two makes me want to say Voltron/Go Lion, but I’m not sure. The rest of the video goes as follow:

  1. Aura Battler Dunbine
  2. Gundam SEED Destiny
  3. Macross Frontier
  4. Linebarrels of Iron
  5. Dancouga Nova
  6. Fafner in the Azure
  7. Demonbane
  8. Superior Defender Gundam Force
  9. Mazinkaiser SKL
  10. Vocaloid??
  11. Gundam 00: Awakening of the Trailblazer
  12. Heroman

The cast looks all right. I was one of the few people that was ok with Mazinkaiser SKL, so seeing it in Super Robot Wars is ok by me. Linebarrels of Iron started off ok, but it got really garbage as it went on. Hopefully, they’ll mute that and just let it have lasers and stuff. Oh, and if you visited it and read it, yes Demonbane was an eroge at one point. I really hope that doesn’t make it in considering the buxomness SRW sometimes dips into.

But the big weird one is Vocaloid. I’ve made jokes about not knowing what Vocaloid is, but this time I really mean it. Does Vocaloid have robots? It’s a voice synthesizer, right? Why, what? I’m legitimately lost on this one. I was once told that because Vocaloid doesn’t really have a story being a tool and not a story, everything is canon even the stuff that contradicts the other stuff. I guess someone was playing with it at Banpresto one day and they just went, “You know what? Super Robot. What the hell?” I guess it’s going to kick ass with the power of song. Maybe that’s why it’s Macross Frontier and not Macross 7 Dynamite.

(Thanks to Super Robot War Z for finding the video)

Aim for Surpassing God or Devil of the Heavens! Mazin Lagann Buster!

Posted in Gunbuster, Gurren Lagann, Mazinger, Super Robot Awesome, Super Robots, Videos with tags , , , , , on 2012/12/11 by OnePixelJumpMan

A little bit ago back in October, there was a new set Soul of Chogokin figure set of Gurren Lagann and Gunbuster. The best thing about these is that their parts were interchangeable with each other and with some older Chogokin figures, so you’d get awesome things like this.

Looks like the concept was in good hands because this Tamashii interview with Gurren Lagann animation director and key animator Akira Amemiya and another artist/designer for Bandai whose name I can’t translate to save my life shows that they’re interested in making a new figure and maybe a show based on that idea.

It’s a pretty good poster. A lot of the interview talks about design and and drawing, how drawing Gurren Lagann after so many years feels nostalgic, designing how Mazinger parts like the Scrander would be used, even at one point talking about a Mazinger Weapon Set. It’s really cool that this is getting considered because I’ve wanted a Gurren Lagann 70s style team up movie forever.

Yes, like this, but with the above robots and made during a time when studios had money.

If it gets off the ground, you can be sure we’re going to be all over this.

Galactic Pretty Boy Retunrs! Star Driver Movie Trailer

Posted in Star Driver, Super Robot Awesome, Super Robots, Videos with tags , , , , , , , , on 2012/12/02 by OnePixelJumpMan

Who remembers Star Driver?

If you don’t, I made a video of it when Super Robot Awesome wasn’t on a long hiatus. The fights weren’t always this good, I had to comb through a handful of episodes before I came across that one, but the animation quality for the robot fights was always solid standard like that video was. The premise was that Takuto Tsunashi, voiced by Mamoru Miyano in a role I’d never guess from the guy who did Light Yagami, was the Legendary “銀河美少年” (Ginga Bishounen) or “Galactic Pretty Boy,” the ultimate threat to the Holy Order of Glittering Stars. The goofy premise and high level action animation made it a fun show to watch.

Now we get the movie.

(From NicoTubeAnime. Thanks to SRWZ for finding it)

It’s looking good from what I can see. The animation still looks solid, especially in the fights. They look like they’re nice and have the same sense of impact I liked from the SRA. The robots are even drawn instead of CG. I don’t have anything against the CG robot thing if it’s consistent with a CG enviornment, like Aquarion, but I do like this a whole lot more.

Star Driver: The Movie comes out in Japan on February 9th.
