Must Be All That Grendizer in the Water. The Middle East’s First Super Robot Show “Torkaizer” PV 1

Posted in Super Robot Awesome, Super Robots, Videos with tags , , , , on 2013/04/08 by OnePixelJumpMan

Who do we think of as being the first to introduce the, “Anything above 0% is still a chance to win” cliche? I think of it being Gurren Lagann, but that might be naive of me.

Anyway, the super robot show from a place you probably didn’t expect. It’s not that weird. The Middle East still loves the hell out of some UFO Robo Grendizer, so a studio, Alter Ego it looks like, just decided that they can make their own. It looks a bit cliche and the animation doesn’t look top notch, but it’s probably going to be a throwback to 70 super style and 80s “save the city” drama which is not necessarily a bad thing. It’ll be interesting to see super robots handled by another culture that just happened to also grow up with a little Nagai in the morning. Also, the robot design is pretty nice and I love scarves on robots. Keep an eye out.

Aim for Surpassing God or Devil of the Heavens! Mazin Lagann Buster!

A little bit ago back in October, there was a new set Soul of Chogokin figure set of Gurren Lagann and Gunbuster. The best thing about these is that their parts were interchangeable with each other and with some older Chogokin figures, so you’d get awesome things like this.

Looks like the concept was in good hands because this Tamashii interview with Gurren Lagann animation director and key animator Akira Amemiya and another artist/designer for Bandai whose name I can’t translate to save my life shows that they’re interested in making a new figure and maybe a show based on that idea.

It’s a pretty good poster. A lot of the interview talks about design and and drawing, how drawing Gurren Lagann after so many years feels nostalgic, designing how Mazinger parts like the Scrander would be used, even at one point talking about a Mazinger Weapon Set. It’s really cool that this is getting considered because I’ve wanted a Gurren Lagann 70s style team up movie forever.

Yes, like this, but with the above robots and made during a time when studios had money.

If it gets off the ground, you can be sure we’re going to be all over this.

Galactic Pretty Boy Retunrs! Star Driver Movie Trailer

Who remembers Star Driver?

If you don’t, I made a video of it when Super Robot Awesome wasn’t on a long hiatus. The fights weren’t always this good, I had to comb through a handful of episodes before I came across that one, but the animation quality for the robot fights was always solid standard like that video was. The premise was that Takuto Tsunashi, voiced by Mamoru Miyano in a role I’d never guess from the guy who did Light Yagami, was the Legendary “銀河美少年” (Ginga Bishounen) or “Galactic Pretty Boy,” the ultimate threat to the Holy Order of Glittering Stars. The goofy premise and high level action animation made it a fun show to watch.

Now we get the movie.

(From NicoTubeAnime. Thanks to SRWZ for finding it)

It’s looking good from what I can see. The animation still looks solid, especially in the fights. They look like they’re nice and have the same sense of impact I liked from the SRA. The robots are even drawn instead of CG. I don’t have anything against the CG robot thing if it’s consistent with a CG enviornment, like Aquarion, but I do like this a whole lot more.

Star Driver: The Movie comes out in Japan on February 9th.

Discotek Media Licenses the Original 1972 Mazinger Z Television Show for 2013

Yeah, I’m not really sure either. According to this Cruchyroll article, Discotek Media has licensed the original Mazinger Z show to be released in 2013 according to this post on Discotek’s Facebook account. To quote:

Discotek Media: “Mazinger Z. Complete Series 1-92. We’re aiming for the end of 2013 for first box set.”

Completely out of nowhere, we’re getting the original Mazinger Z show in full on DVD in the states. It’ll be the first official true translation of this series and the first attempt at it since the localization Tranzor Z. We’ll actually be able to see reasonable subtitles and not things about crabsticks and Tall God Z.

This could go on for hours.

No, no more of that. Just honest to goodness old style Mazinger.

Everyone back there is getting that punch right in the face.

You’ll learn more as we learn more.

If you crush the monster’s head, it won’t have a mouth to breathe fire at you. And then you just stab Gamera in the head. What’s he going to do? Be a turtle at you?

Getter Robo vs. Gurren Lagann.gif

Whoever made these gets the highest praise for the effort alone, and it’s cool on top of that. Somebody made me aware of this little series of .gifs where Ryoma and Simon duke it by turning into Getter 1 and Gurren Lagann. Check it out the album here, and check out the guy’s totally sweet Tumblr with this and other totally sweet things here.

Ryoma strikes me as a chamomile man.

The mystery creator of these has my thanks for letting me show them and may now step forward and claim their “Pretty Cool Dude” prize, because that’s totally sweet. Ideally, it’ll lead to increased interest in this idea and we’ll finally get that 70s style movie, “Getter Robo tai Gurren Lagann.”

It lives on, if only in my heart.

Super Robot Awesome – UFO Robo Grendizer: Never Stop Attacking

I’m calling this one an awesome moment for the Saucer Beast despite it losing in the end. Not a lot of enemies can be cut in half and still be totally fine.

With the new Viper Whip, you can grab an enemy’s face and throw them through buildings at longer ranges.

Oh, and yes, this was made by two people who’d go on to make Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny. I don’t know what happened either.

Episode 6 of GEAR Fighter Dendoh.
